We might have to wait a little longer for the first trailer of James Gunn’s upcoming Superman movie, but at least he’s given us a taste of the music we can expect.
Right now, the weight on James Gunn’s shoulders is immense. As co-CEO of DC Studios, he’s tasked with steering the new DC Universe in a direction that could either yield tremendous success or force yet another rethink on DC’s connected film ambitions—because let’s face it, there’s only so many universal reboots you can launch, no matter what the comic books suggest. Recently, Gunn teased on his Twitter account that a trailer for his Superman film is set to drop this Thursday. This teaser will give us our initial glimpse into the new DCU, at least in live-action form; his animated series, Creature Commandos, has already made its debut as the first entry in this expanded universe.
In the meantime, Gunn has shared a sneak peek of what appears to be the film’s main theme. If you’re eager to hear it, you can find it in the clip above, accompanied by a GIF featuring David Corenswet as Superman, soaring skywards as the music plays. The piece has a lovely, mellow vibe that feels both fresh and nostalgic. Fans may notice a nod to the iconic theme from the 1978 Superman film, originally crafted by the legendary John Williams.
This new theme is the work of John Murphy, a composer well-known for his scores in films like 28 Days Later, Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, and notably, The Suicide Squad, which was also directed by Gunn. This project marks the third collaboration between the two, as Murphy lent his talent to the soundtrack of Guardians of the Galaxy 3 as well.
Although we’re getting the teaser this week, the film itself isn’t slated for release until July 11 next year. But I’m sure the anticipation will just make the eventual release all the more satisfying!
