Valve, the major player in the PC gaming world, has revised its rules concerning the sale of season passes on Steam.
According to the latest updates on Steamworks, developers and publishers now need to set a clear date when promoting upcoming season pass content on a game’s store page. Valve insists that if they can’t “clearly communicate” the release timeline of this future content, they should refrain from selling or taking pre-orders for it.
Developers and publishers are allowed to provide a broad release window—like a specific quarter, year, or even season—as well as an exact date for the forthcoming content.
“As a Season Pass provider, you’re essentially promising future content,” Valve explained.
“During the launch of a Season Pass, you’ll be required to commit to release timings for each piece of content included. This timing is a pledge to both your customers and Steam.”
“If you’re not in a position to provide clear details about the content and its release date for each DLC, we advise against offering a Season Pass on Steam,” the company emphasized.
