Earlier this week, Steel Wool Studios revealed that “Five Nights at Freddy’s: Secret of the Mimic” is set for release on June 13th on both PS5 and PC. However, what caught everyone’s attention was the sudden removal of any reference to PSVR 2 support, despite an earlier showcase where the game was presented on PSVR 2.
The game first captured the public’s curiosity at PAX West 2024, where attendees got a taste of it through a playable demo on PSVR 2. It seemed destined to be a seamless blend of VR and traditional gameplay, appealing to a broad audience of the XR studio’s fans.
Steel Wool Studios, which had an early financial boost with a $5 million investment from HTC back in 2016, has been known for its notable contributions to VR gaming. These include “Hello Neighbor: Search and Rescue” released in 2023, “FNAF: Help Wanted” in 2019, and its sequel a year ago in 2024.
Yet, with the latest release date announcement for the next “FNAF” installment, any indication of PSVR 2 support has been conspicuously omitted from their marketing materials. This includes the game’s PlayStation Store page, which previously mentioned the option for PSVR 2 support, as confirmed by web archive snapshots, only to have that mention completely erased now.
The only recent nod to PSVR 2 came through a PlayStation post about the game’s release date on February 12th, but even that post has since disappeared. The studio has remained tight-lipped about future plans regarding PSVR 2 support, leaving fans to wonder if the PC versions—available soon on the likes of Epic Games Store and Steam—might still offer a VR option.
We’re eagerly awaiting a response from Steel Wool Studios to clarify these details and will keep you updated as soon as more information becomes available. The question is whether this is an indication of a postponed VR launch or signals another release strategy altogether.
