Alta, renowned for its work on A Township Tale (2021), recently lifted the curtain on more details about their upcoming dungeon-crawler, REAVE. The game is still under development, but the team has shared a tantalizing look at its evolving systems and environments.
The latest developer update gave fans a peek into what’s described as the largest area in the game to date: ‘The Fallen Bastion.’ This area combines both open and narrow spaces, offering a mix of brightly lit spots and shadowy corners perfect for sneaky ambushes. Sean Ellis, the lead environment artist, highlighted the diversity in design, promising players a unique and strategic experience.
At the heart of this environment sits a mystical pedestal, a focal point for gameplay where players can initiate epic boss battles. For the time being, a massive spider occupies the pedestal’s challenge, serving as a placeholder while the team perfects the game’s boss fight mechanics.
In the constantly evolving landscape of REAVE, previously showcased areas are undergoing significant changes, some even facing complete redesigns. Alta’s commitment to refining the game’s experience is evident in this iterative process.
A fresh enemy model, set to replace the earlier skeleton placeholders, was another highlight unveiled. These foes come with varying levels of difficulty, influenced by their weaponry and armor, to keep players on their toes.
Central to REAVE’s gameplay is its in-world currency, known as ‘Echoes.’ Players gather Echoes by defeating enemies or exploring their surroundings. This currency allows players to unlock loot rooms and facilitates safe extraction from dungeons, transporting them back to the game’s main social hub.
For those eager to be at the forefront of this game’s development, Alta occasionally opens up opportunities for testers via their Discord community. Although there’s no official release date yet, the development team has confirmed that the game will be available on Quest 2 and newer models, as well as PC VR headsets.
