Disney just gave us our first glimpse of Stitch in their upcoming live-action Lilo and Stitch remake, and let’s be honest, it’s a bit unsettling.
It feels like only yesterday we were discussing the live-action adaptation of another beloved animated favorite, How to Train Your Dragon. Now, Disney has joined the fray with their own reimagining. They dropped a 30-second teaser, and in typical cheeky Stitch fashion, we see him going full Godzilla on a beach, demolishing sandcastles—one notably shaped like the iconic Disney castle. Not much else is going on apart from a fleeting moment where our CGI friend hangs out in an empty space, interacting with the release date text (mark your calendars for May 23, 2025). Yep, it’s quite a minimal sneak peek!
The storyline remains true to its roots, focusing on “the bond between a lonely human girl named Lilo and her dog-like alien, Stitch, who’s been engineered to cause chaos.” The good news for fans is that Chris Sanders reprises his role as the voice of Stitch, with direction now helmed by Dean Fleischer Camp, notable for Marcel the Shell with Shoes On.
As for the cast, newcomer Maia Kealoha steps into the role of Lilo, while Sydney Agudong, from On My Block, will play her sister, Nani. Bringing some comedy into the mix, Zach Galifianakis lends his voice to Jumba, Billy Magnussen joins as Pleakley, and we have Hannah Waddingham, who many speculate might portray the Grand Councilwoman, though details are still under wraps.
With the film set to release in under a year, we’re likely to get a full trailer soon. In the meantime, Disney’s geared up for a lucrative season with the release of Moana 2, hitting theaters this week. So, stay tuned!
