Many fans are concerned that the Scream series might be losing its edge after Melissa Barrera’s exit, but Spyglass Entertainment and Paramount Pictures are charging forward with a revised seventh installment. This next chapter is set to bring back Sidney Prescott, along with her family, thrusting them into a world of distress and drama. The latest update reveals that Isabel May has nabbed the role of Sidney’s daughter.
The Hollywood Reporter disclosed this development, indicating that the franchise might be leaning heavily into the ‘legacy sequel’ narrative to rejuvenate its storyline. While hardcore fans might not be overly concerned about Barrera’s situation, Jenna Ortega’s absence could be more noticeable to casual viewers.
On a side note, Isabel May, known for her roles in 1883 and Young Sheldon, is negotiating to join the project. Filming should kick off soon, aiming for a release on February 27, 2026. Kevin Williamson, who penned Scream 1, 2, and 4, will sit in the director’s chair, with the script crafted again by Guy Busick, who co-wrote the 2022 and 2023 Scream films. Initially, Radio Silence was set to step away after the last movie, with Christopher Landon (from Happy Death Day) attached to the follow-up. However, significant changes backstage led to a revision of those plans.
The 2022 movie aimed to breathe new life into the series without rebooting it and was seen as a legacy sequel by many film buffs. It cleverly toyed with Hollywood’s penchant for such narratives. Meanwhile, Scream 6 veered in an unexpected but well-received direction. A portion of the fan base is thrilled to see Neve Campbell’s Sidney Prescott returning, even though it seems she might never escape the clutches of Ghostface for a peaceful ending.
For the storyline concerning the Carpenter sisters, played by Barrera and Ortega, it appears complete after just two films… unless future scripts bring them back into the narrative with unresolved issues and emotions. Given how Scream 6 wrapped up, fans unhappy with the new direction can consider it a satisfying conclusion to their saga.
