In a significant move this year, indie publisher Reforged Studios has expanded its portfolio by acquiring Yellow Lab Games. Although the financial details remain under wraps, it is clear that the South African studio will retain its operational independence, as noted by GI.biz. Gaming enthusiasts can look forward to Yellow Lab’s upcoming roguelite RPG, Metavoidal, which is slated for a Steam release in the first quarter of 2025.
This acquisition follows Reforged’s strategic purchases of Ground Shatter and Extra Mile Studios just last August, marking a year of growth and expansion for the publisher.
Reflecting on this acquisition, Peter Van Der Watt, Reforged’s CEO and founder, shared his thoughts: “Having grown up in South Africa, I’ve always recognized the immense game development talent the country harbors,” he expressed. “Yellow Lab Games has been on my radar for a while, especially after witnessing the positive feedback surrounding Metavoidal, their debut into the PC and console gaming markets.”
Van Der Watt’s journey took him from South Africa to Scotland in 2011 to establish his first game studio, and since then, he has become an advocate for South African game development on a global scale. “Today, Reforged’s board echoes my enthusiasm for the potential of this region,” he continued. “So when the chance came to collaborate with David Hecker and his talented team at Yellow Lab, we jumped at it. We’re thrilled to integrate South Africa’s leading game development talent into Reforged and firmly believe this marks the beginning of a broader investment in Africa’s growing gaming industry.”
