Rec Room has always been a hub for engaging first-party adventures, perfect for teaming up with friends or jumping in with other players from around the globe. This social VR platform has just rolled out its latest addition, ‘Run the Block,’ drawing inspiration from the beloved Dreamcast classic, Jet Set Radio from 2000.
This multiplayer mini-game, which was launched on December 11th, has already captivated over a million players. Embracing the essence of Jet Set Radio, ‘Run the Block’ allows up to ten players to competitively and creatively race and parkour through a sprawling urban landscape.
Even though you won’t find the iconic aggressive rollerblades of the original game, there’s plenty of action to keep you on your toes. You can expect to dash, leap, and grind across extensive lines that weave through the cityscape, all while leaving your mark with graffiti tags throughout the bustling environment.
Over the past year, Rec Room has been selective with its first-party game releases. The most notable addition before this was ‘My Little Monster,’ a pet farming simulator. Alongside introducing themed content, like character packs inspired by the ‘Monster High’ series and Destiny, the platform has put significant effort into enhancing its creator tools. These improvements support users in crafting intricate worlds and assets, which they can monetize within the game’s creator economy. Earlier in the year, the introduction of full-body avatars expanded customization options even further.
Continuing to broaden its accessibility, Rec Room recently launched on the Nintendo Switch in November, adding to an already extensive list of devices. This includes compatibility with PC VR, all Quest VR headsets, PSVR, iOS, Android, Pico, Xbox, and PlayStation, ensuring players can connect no matter where they game.
