Showtime is bringing fans back to the world of Dexter with a fresh twist: a new prequel series called “Original Sin,” and they’ve just dropped the first trailer to tease what’s in store. Though the original Dexter series came to a close over a decade ago, it seems the era of reboots and treasured intellectual properties is far from over. After all, the TV world saw Dexter’s sequel series, “Dexter: New Blood,” hit the screens in 2022, taking place a decade after the original events. Now, Paramount and Showtime are back with a preview of “Dexter: Original Sin,” set before everything we’ve come to know. Quick heads up, if you haven’t finished watching “New Blood,” you might encounter some spoilers about its conclusion. So, brace yourself!
In the trailer, scenes flash from the end of “New Blood,” revealing Dexter in a snow-covered landscape, wounded after being shot by his son, Harrison. As he undergoes treatment in a hospital, we find ourselves delving into Dexter’s past, setting the stage for the prequel. The storyline transports us back to 1991 Miami. According to the plot summary, “Dexter: Original Sin” follows Dexter, played by Patrick Gibson, as he evolves from a student to an avenger with a dark side. With his ominous urges becoming too loud to ignore, Dexter must learn to control and direct his inner demons.
Guided by his father, Harry, portrayed by Christian Slater, Dexter embraces a strict Code to hunt down those deemed worthy of removal from society, all while avoiding the gaze of the authorities. A particular hurdle arises as the young Dexter starts interning in forensics at Miami Metro Police.
Michael C. Hall reprises his role as Dexter, this time lending his voice to narrate the journey, and fans will be delighted to see Sarah Michelle Gellar of Buffy fame making a guest appearance. Being a prequel, you can bet Dexter will stay out of any irreversible predicaments, although it’s sure to be an entertaining journey either way.
The series might shed light on Dexter’s fate following “New Blood,” especially since another sequel titled “Resurrection” is slated to follow. It wouldn’t be shocking to see the prequel conclude with Dexter waking from a dream or near-death experience. But, we’ll need to wait until December 13th for the show’s premiere on Paramount+ to find out how it all ties together.
