If you’ve ever dreamed of diving into No Man’s Sky with the flair of a dinosaur-loving character who somehow also ended up dating Jennifer Aniston, today’s update might just be what you’ve been waiting for. Hello Games has just released the Relics update, and the headline feature is the ability to collect massive alien fossils.
Remember when the Worlds update dropped back in January? It expanded the game’s universe by adding billions of stars and planets, including gas giants and some peculiar flying squid that might not take kindly to overzealous fishing.
The Relics update brings a twist to your space exploration adventures by adding a new hobby: space paleontology. Think of it like what Ross Geller from Friends does, but in space—except maybe with less dinosaur talk and fewer sandwiches. You get to dig up “hundreds of unique bones,” carefully figuring out how these ancient creatures once looked. Whether you decide to create bizarre hybrids and convince the aliens they’re descendants of an ugly, ancient race called the Fartongueians is up to you. It could be a fun prank.
But tread carefully. Reanimated Guardians also make an appearance, standing as stone sentinels near fossil beds, ready to fend off any adventurous Travellers meddling with sacred grave sites. These stone behemoths are more the type you’d expect are hiding secrets than just being a creepy face with a deranged body. You’ll also discover Living Stone Sentries and Colossal Stone Effigies, these majestic dormant figures are remnants of civilizations past.
As you stumble upon these fossil sites, expect encounters with living fossils too. Titanic Boneworms and skeletal creatures roam certain planets and purple star systems. Want to monetize your bone-collecting skills? Visit Fossil Collectors onboard space stations where you can trade your bone exhibits for a variety of fossils or even cook up something bone-tacious.
The adventure doesn’t stop there. Sign up for the Galactic Paleontology Society and embark on the new expedition Relics introduces. Complete challenges and you might land a sentient rock jetpack, or even the chance to alter your character’s appearance to look like a sentient rock, alongside a skeletal pet companion for the journey.
