And just like that, my streak of avoiding extra charges for Nintendo Switch Online has come to an end.
In a recent announcement, Nintendo revealed that one of the popular features of the Switch is set to wrap up shortly after the re-release of Xenoblade Chronicles X. Additionally, another feature is not going to be compatible with the forthcoming Switch 2.
As of March 25, around 12:59 a.m. ET, the My Nintendo Gold program will be discontinued. This initiative previously allowed players to earn 1% back in eShop credit from physical first-party releases within their first year, and 5% back from any eShop purchases automatically. The program’s swan song will exclude any physical games released between March 25, 2024, and the program’s closure unless their one-year mark hasn’t been reached. This means titles like Endless Ocean: Luminous through to Xenoblade Chronicles X Definitive Edition are in the clear, but Pokemon Legends: Z-A and Metroid Prime 4: Beyond won’t make the cut.
In related news, the support page for Nintendo Switch Online Vouchers has been updated, confirming that they won’t be compatible with Switch 2 games. These vouchers, which users could buy in pairs for around $99 US or the local equivalent, allowed them to redeem for first-party releases. Fortunately, these vouchers will continue to be valid for future titles on the original Switch, including games like Legends Z-A and Prime 4.
