New Sonic the Hedgehog 3 Trailer Hints at a Pokemon Crossover—Here’s What That Might Look Like

Today, Paramount and Sega have dropped an exciting new trailer for Sonic the Hedgehog 3, surprising fans with an unexpected nod to Pokemon.

It’s been a while since the initial trailer for Sonic the Hedgehog 3 was released, and with the movie just around the corner, fans have been eagerly awaiting more sneak peeks. Well, the wait is finally over! This second official trailer is out, and it presents us with a hilarious moment where a kid asks if Tails is Detective Pikachu. For one, it’s pretty cool they can reference that; two, it was an unexpected, but pleasant, surprise; and three, it’s got me seriously imagining what a crossover between Sonic and Pokemon would look like.

Just picture it—could we see Sonic characters taking on Pokemon in battles? Personally, I’d reckon Sonic wouldn’t choose Shaymin just because it’s another hedgehog. More likely, he’d go for Jolteon, which is not only blazing fast—ranking sixth in speed among Pokemon—but also suits Sonic’s cool persona. Or perhaps we’re looking at a scenario where Knuckles gets a Pokemon-esque makeover. Whatever the case, it’s a packed trailer and it even gives us a sneak peek at the Chao-themed diner where Team Sonic hangs out—a feature I’d argue is a major highlight. Plus, there’s a poignant scene that matches Shadow with the ill-fated Maria, for those of us (yes, I’m one of you) who enjoy a good tear over Sonic’s storyline.

Apart from the tidbits revealed in the trailer, there’s a lot more to anticipate in the movie itself. Jeff Fowler, the director, has hinted at a surprise within the film—a teaser of more characters set to appear in future installments. While nothing’s confirmed, I’m betting on Big the Cat making an appearance.
