Matt Forbeck, a New York Times bestselling author known for his work on the Marvel Multiverse RPG, is teaming up with his son Marty to introduce a fresh tabletop adventure in the intriguing world of Minecraft. Currently open for pre-orders, this new game titled “Minecraft: Roll for Adventure: The Temple of the Charged Creeper” aims to blend the wildly popular online crafting game’s charm with an accessible set of role-playing rules.
Although Penguin Random House, the publisher, is keeping specifics about the game’s mechanics under wraps—a common practice with pre-orders of high-profile IP tabletop games—the book’s cover shows a pair of six-sided dice, and their listing confirms that four dice come with the gamebook. It also features a brief note about a “removable character sheet” and a “rules reference,” designed to either facilitate solo play or assist a game master, here referred to as “your narrator.”
The storyline immerses players in a secluded village overrun by “illagers,” the antagonistic figures from the Minecraft universe. If you’ve read Matt Forbeck’s 2020 novel, “Minecraft Dungeons: The Rise of the Arch-Illager,” you’ll recognize these foes. Similar to the classic Dungeons & Dragons format, players will need to come to this village’s rescue by uncovering the mystery of the Temple of the Charged Creeper and laying waste to it.
Previous collaborations have explored the fusion of Minecraft with Dungeons & Dragons, like the adventure Lightning Keep geared towards younger audiences. However, this creation is purely the brainchild of the Forbeck duo. Matt Forbeck’s impressive background in designing tabletop games and weaving narratives for big-name franchises such as D&D, Minecraft, Halo, and Life is Strange, not to mention his original works, lend credibility to this venture. We’ll find out how this new adventure resonates with both Minecraft enthusiasts and tabletop gaming fans when it releases in July 2025.
For those eager to dive in, the hardcover edition of “Minecraft: Roll for Adventure: The Temple of the Charged Creeper” is ready for pre-order on Penguin Random House’s website at a price of $20.
