Microsoft’s highly anticipated Build conference is set to take place in Seattle, Washington, stretching from May 19 to May 22. While the tech giant has kept details about what to expect at Build 2025 under wraps, it’s a pretty safe assumption that artificial intelligence will play a starring role.

But what exactly is Microsoft Build? Well, it’s a must-attend event for software engineers and web developers, typically scheduled in May each year. It’s a golden opportunity for tech professionals to explore the tools and technologies that Microsoft has to offer. Beyond that, it’s also a fantastic networking event, allowing attendees to connect with others in their field. The tools and technologies unveiled at Build are often pivotal, influencing tech experiences for a broad audience. Occasionally, Microsoft also reveals news that grabs the everyday user’s attention.
Flashback to Build 2024, where AI was the star of the show—no surprise given the tech landscape. Microsoft spent time discussing AI agents, unveiled its vision models like Phi-3, showcased Edge’s real-time translation magic, and announced custom emojis for Microsoft Teams. Qualcomm made waves too, unveiling a Snapdragon X Elite-powered mini PC, although that particular device didn’t make it to the shelves.
Interestingly, last year’s event was preceded by a private session where Microsoft introduced the Surface Pro 11 and Surface Laptop 7, both equipped with Snapdragon X chips. This year, Microsoft has more Surface hardware coming down the pipeline, yet these devices might get their own debut, separate from Build 2025. Our Senior Editor, Zac Bowden, hinted that “Microsoft intends to begin shipping these smaller Surface PCs in the April/May timeframe.” We’ll have to keep an eye on how this aligns with Build’s schedule.
