Helldivers 2 just introduced a new Major Order, and whether you’re grappling with the aftermath of the last one or thrilled about accessing the game on Steam after a long hiatus, there’s plenty to look forward to beyond just the mission at hand.
With the previous Major Order bringing the newly updated Democracy Space Station back into the fray against the Illuminates, you’re once again heading to the bug front. Then again, if you’re a devoted bugdiver, this is likely familiar territory for you.
This latest Major Order might seem straightforward at first glance: gather 22 million common samples from Erata Prime, 15 million rare ones from Gacrux, and ensure that Super Earth maintains control over Fenrir III within a span of four days.
But here’s where it gets intriguing. Your efforts are aimed at developing technology to combat “The Gloom” – a peculiar spore cloud that has long plagued several sectors under Terminid control. Interestingly, it could have uses beyond making your ship need foglights.
According to Arrowhead’s detailed briefing, extensive tests on Terminids have demonstrated that Gloom spores can cause mutations which might dramatically boost the yield of Element 710, potentially increasing it by up to tenfold.
“The potential impact of this discovery is immense,” the briefing outlines, suggesting that The Gloom could be a vast, untapped source of energy. Its use might facilitate faster-than-light travel for purposes beyond military and colony expansion, branching out into trade and research, as well as further military and colony operations.
This development may add new capabilities to Super Earth’s arsenal beyond the DSS. Alternatively, it might unfold as many players predict – perhaps resulting in unforeseen consequences, like the emergence of more formidable bugs or unleashed Gloom mutation test subjects.
We’ll have to wait and see how things unfold in Helldivers 2 – though knowing the game, it’ll likely be a mix of both.
