The team behind Gorilla Tag, Another Axiom, has just rolled out a significant update for Orion Drift since it entered early access last month. Players can now dive into ‘Capture the Beacon’ (CTB), a thrilling addition to the game’s expansive space station setting. This new feature resembles the classic capture the flag, but with a twist—there’s no limit on the number of players or game duration, allowing anyone to jump in whenever they please.
While the studio hasn’t spilled all the beans on what the update includes, they’ve hinted at more surprises. Mark your calendars for tomorrow, March 28th, when everything unveils at 10AM PT.
Orion Drift, which first appeared on the Quest for free in late February, harnesses the energetic movement style made famous by Gorilla Tag. Players propel themselves around the vast space station by literally pumping their arms, creating a unique and engaging way to explore.
Aside from CTB, the game already hosts a plethora of activities. Among these is ‘Drift Ball,’ a standout favorite that feels like a modern twist on the beloved Echo VR, with its low-gravity, handball-inspired gameplay. The space station also offers other exciting mini-games. Players can scale obstacles parkour-style, sharpen their Drift Ball skills in practice arenas, or enjoy rounds of golf and basketball. Additionally, cozy lounges are perfect for watching live matches in various arenas.
Currently, servers can handle up to 75 players, but Another Axiom is ambitiously working toward supporting 200-player games in the future. Expanding their mini-game lineup is a step towards achieving this goal, though Orion Drift is still in its early days.
Though it shares Gorilla Tag’s formula of easy-to-join social gaming, Orion Drift hasn’t yet achieved the same viral success. As of now, the game has accumulated around 3,300 user reviews but hasn’t cracked the top 50 best-selling games on Quest, where titles like Animal Company, Yeeps, and Gorilla Tag itself lead the charts.
