The year 2024 has been monumental for Grinding Gear Games. They’ve delighted Path of Exile fans with two major releases for the original game and also launched the early access of Path of Exile 2. Despite its incomplete status, Path of Exile 2 already stands out as one of the top action RPGs available. Initially, the plan was to develop both games side-by-side, alternating between new content for PoE 1 and updates for PoE 2. However, as revealed in a video featuring Jonathan Rogers, the team faced challenges in keeping up with this ambitious schedule. Nevertheless, February 20 promises to be an exciting day for Path of Exile players, even without a new League launch.
While the anticipation for the inaugural League of Path of Exile 2 is real, with patch 0.2.0 still on the horizon, PoE 1 has been holding steady with its Settlers of Kalguur League for over 200 days—a record duration for any League in PoE history. In response to fans growing eager for fresh content, GGG is hosting the Legacy of Phrecia event starting February 20. This event serves both as an apology and a rejuvenation for the game, introducing 19 new Ascendancy classes inspired by the game’s rich lore and mechanics.
The Legacy of Phrecia, although designed for PoE 1, offers a glimpse of potential inspiration for future Path of Exile 2 events or Leagues. For veteran players, this event is a breath of fresh air. Having celebrated nearly 12 years of gameplay—14 if you count the 2011 closed beta—the Ascendancy classes have remained largely unchanged since their inception almost a decade ago.
More than a minor update, the event shakes things up with 19 innovative Ascendancy classes that encourage creative builds across various niches. Take, for example, the new Harbinger Ascendancy for the Witch. Rooted in the Harbinger League of 2017, this class flips the script by turning traditional enemies into allies, offering a unique spin on familiar mechanics. Similarly, the Marauder’s Antiquarian Ascendancy taps into the power of ancient relics, creating intriguing gameplay dynamics.
Considering its significance, PoE 2 players should not overlook the Legacy of Phrecia event in PoE 1. It’s set to be more than just a temporary addition. The alternate Ascendancy classes are confirmed to make a return in future private Leagues. For now, players can revel in event rewards, such as the exclusive Autumn Knight armor set, available at levels 20, 40, 60, and 80. Designed for use in both PoE games and not purchasable elsewhere, these rewards along with Twitch Drops available in the event’s first week, make participation worthwhile.
In essence, the Legacy of Phrecia offers an exciting opportunity for both PoE 1 and PoE 2 players, promising a diverse and engaging experience that simultaneously honors the past while stirring anticipation for future updates.
