At a recent Capital Markets Day event for investors and the financial media, Remedy Entertainment, the creators of the acclaimed Alan Wake 2, shared some exciting announcements. Among the highlights was the revelation that Control 2 will be an action RPG, and Alan Wake 2 has impressively sold 1.8 million units.
While these figures are impressive, there’s another game making waves that you might not have heard of: Farming Simulator 25. This supposedly niche series has defied expectations by reaching an astonishing 2 million copies sold since its release on November 12, 2024. That’s just last week—talk about a bumper crop!
Now, I’m not here to pit these two games against each other; both are fantastic in their own rights and deserve recognition for their achievements. However, it’s curious how Alan Wake 2 is celebrated as a critical darling, while Farming Simulator 25 flies under the radar outside its devoted community. I’m not helping much either; there’s just as much value in covering Farming Simulator 25 as there is in discussing Tekken 8, given their popularity and the compelling stories within their communities.
Interestingly, the disparity in attention might boil down to perception. Despite massive sales, Farming Simulator 25 often carries the ‘niche’ tag. But it’s not alone—just peruse Steam’s top sellers, and you’ll find titles like Disney Dreamlight Valley, Hearts of Iron 4 expansions, and Foxhole sharing a similar fate: lots of players, but not much mainstream buzz. Additionally, for Alan Wake 2, its absence from Steam might impact its reach, as many PC gamers haven’t been able to jump on board.
Ultimately, this isn’t a new phenomenon and it’s not a warning sign for the industry. Instead, it highlights that you don’t need to be a big-name AAA release to attract fans and achieve success. It’s intriguing how the spotlight shines differently on various games, but both Alan Wake 2 and Farming Simulator 25 can thrive and cater to their distinct fanbases. And isn’t that just brilliant?
Big kudos to Farming Simulator 25 for achieving such impressive sales numbers, and cheers to Remedy as they push forward with control 2 and their other thrilling projects. It’ll be interesting to see which title comes out on top: Farming Simulator 2026 or Control 2. Only time will tell.
