Exciting times are ahead for fans of cozy city-building games as Overthrown gears up for its early access launch. The game is slated for release on the Xbox Series X/S and PC on December 5th, and there’s more good news for subscribers since Overthrown will also be available on day one via PC Game Pass and Xbox Game Pass Ultimate. PlayStation users, don’t worry; a PS5 port is scheduled to follow after the initial early access period, which is expected to last about a year.
In a special showcase, Game Rant has unveiled an exclusive sneak peek at Overthrown, a city builder that’s not only comprehensive in its co-op features but also introduces some intriguing spins on the traditional format. Look forward to engaging with it on your PC or Xbox consoles in early December 2024.
Brought to you by indie developer Brimstone, who previously graced us with the 2016 jousting game Lance A Lot and the 2018 online shooter Banzai Royale, Overthrown is set to premiere through Steam Early Access and the Xbox Game Preview programs starting December 5.
In anticipation of its launch, Maximum Entertainment, Overthrown’s publisher, has generously shared some fresh screenshots, exclusive to Game Rant. These images not only highlight the game’s vibrant art style but also showcase a unique angle in city building—literally, as Overthrown is primarily viewed from a third-person perspective. A concept not entirely unheard of, as games like Metropolismania in 2001 explored it, but still refreshing enough today to set Overthrown apart from the competition.
Instead of relying solely on a bird’s-eye view, Overthrown immerses you into the role of a hands-on queen, ready to chop wood, construct infrastructure, and fend off threats like gutsy bandits and fearsome mutants. This blend introduces elements of action-adventure, with the queen’s ability to sprint across water and wield weapons with dramatic flair reminiscent of your favorite anime protagonist. After the dust settles from these encounters, players can switch back to managing their city, with the classic overhead view available for those who prefer it.
Brimstone has projected that Overthrown will remain in early access for about a year, with potential for a full release as early as late 2025. This phase will be crucial, as the developers intend to harness player feedback to refine the game. Initially, Overthrown will support solo play and online co-op for up to six players, each season bringing new challenges, opportunities, and visual changes.
Beginning December 5, players can access the early access version on Xbox Series X/S and PC via Steam. Overthrown will also make its debut as a day-one title on Xbox Game Pass, with availability through PC Game Pass and Microsoft’s Ultimate subscription tier. Due to Sony’s policies against early access titles on the PS Store, PlayStation gamers will have to be patient, though a PS5 version is on the horizon.
In this game, you’ll wield the power of an ancient soul-stealing crown, defend your kingdom from roaming mutants and bandits, and transform a wild landscape into a thriving community. The game’s unique mechanics allow you to lift and relocate objects like buildings or even enemy nests to turn the tide in battles. Whether you’re flinging entire forests or traversing lakes at breakneck speeds to save your villagers, the game promises a blend of construction, strategy, and action-packed sequences.
Overthrown offers both a single-player experience and a lively co-op mode for up to six players, giving you and your friends the chance to build, fight, and survive together. Will your kingdom flourish, or will your people desert you for the lure of outlaws? Embrace the chaos of this city builder and tweak your strategies season by season as you strive to keep your realm—and your citizens—thriving.
