We all know about Sony’s less-than-stellar Spider-Man-less Spider-Verse attempts, but the director of “Kraven the Hunter” believes his movie deserves a chance.
Let’s face it: Venom, Morbius, and Madame Web all share three things. They’re tied to Spider-Man, brought to life by Sony, and, frankly, haven’t exactly hit the mark (though I’ll admit, Venom has a charm all its own, like a guilty pleasure). The consensus is they’re not great, and even J.C. Chandor, the director of the upcoming “Kraven the Hunter,” acknowledges this. Despite being another villain-centric film without Spider-Man, Chandor hopes fans will give his project a look. In a chat with ComicBook, he admitted that Sony’s track record hasn’t been spotless but urged audiences to give his film a fair shot anyway.
Chandor expressed, “I don’t want to delve too deeply into it, but here’s my take: for me, as a filmmaker, my top goal is to deliver something special, especially over the past years as fans have been deeply immersed in this universe. Some folks have been disappointed with choices and outcomes in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe.”
He continued, “Other films have met great success. It’s been hit or miss. We need people to take a chance on us, disregard the past missteps, and give our film a shot.” Now, I have to point out that he’s painting a rosy picture—of the five live-action Spider-Verse films, the three that succeeded are all from the Venom series, a character fans naturally gravitate toward more than Morbius or Madame Web. That makes the “mixed success” claim a bit optimistic, doesn’t it?
Chandor remains optimistic, explaining that he believes audiences will see they’ve crafted an enjoyable story. He noted, “You’ll realize we’ve done our best to create an engaging narrative. Once the movie ends, you’ll see the potential for more exciting developments. My focus was to keep our story self-contained and compelling, paving the way for many fun opportunities.”
As for what those exciting prospects might be, your guess is as good as mine. It’s all contingent on the film’s performance, and we’ll just have to wait to see how it unfolds.
“Kraven the Hunter” hits theaters soon on December 13.
