RPGs are known for their sprawling worlds full of hidden treasures and surprises, and according to one of the developers behind Avowed, this very element defines the genre. These days, many gamers are all about completing games entirely, driven by the allure of trophies and achievements. But think back to when gaming was more about the journey than ticking off a checklist. Berto Ritger, the region director and senior area designer at Obsidian Entertainment, shares this nostalgic perspective. In a conversation with GamesRadar about Avowed, he explained, “I believe the heart of RPGs lies in the content you might miss—it’s what makes each player’s experience unique and personal.”
Ritger argues that the variety of options in RPGs enriches discussions about them, since no two players will see the game the same way. “It’s that moment when you tell someone, ‘I stumbled upon a hidden area beneath the docks. If you explore the eastern side, there’s a secret tucked away there. Oh, and you can even climb to the top for more discoveries,'” he says. This difference in experiences fosters fascinating conversations about the game.
This isn’t to say that Obsidian doesn’t have specific highlights they want players to enjoy. Ritger clarifies, “There are elements we deliberately draw your attention to. Take the lighthouse—it’s so tall that it’s naturally enticing. We want to support that curiosity. Sure, climb it and leap into the ocean if you dare; we intentionally guide your eyes to these experiences.”
Personally, I long for the days before we had endless guides and walkthroughs for every game detail. The magic of stumbling upon something unexpected and sharing those adventures with friends creates a special kind of fun. So, when you dive into Avowed, perhaps venture off the beaten path—who knows what amazing secrets you might uncover?
