Last Thursday, something remarkable happened in the VR world. Bigscreen unveiled their latest creation, the Beyond 2, and orders came pouring in at an unexpected rate. In a jaw-dropping feat, the new headset’s first day outperformed what the original managed in a staggering six-month period. If you blinked, you might have missed how quickly those orders stacked up.
The numbers speak for themselves: Within just 25 minutes, Beyond 2 surpassed the entire first day sales of its predecessor, Beyond 1. By the time the first hour ticked by, sales had already doubled the launch day figures of the original headset. Imagine this: in a mere ten hours, Beyond 2 had outsold the first four months of Beyond 1’s journey. It’s no wonder why heads are turning in the VR community.
Darshan Shankar, the CEO and founder of Bigscreen, took to X last Friday to share a particularly astounding statistic: “In just 24 hours, Beyond 2 managed to sell 10 times the amount Beyond 1 did on its release day two years prior. It’s astonishing that in a single day, Beyond 2 equaled Beyond 1’s sales over its first half-year. Simply exceptional.”
What makes this achievement even more impressive is that Bigscreen achieved it without spending a dime on advertising. Shankar highlighted, “We didn’t pay influencers to hype our product. No slick video produced by a pricey agency. Zero ads.” Instead, the company turned to a simple strategy: send out a limited number of early units to select reviewers. Around ten units found their way to influencers like Tested, Thrillseeker, MRTV, and VR Flight Sim Guy.
For anyone not in the loop, the Beyond 2 comes with some enticing specs. It’s available in two versions: one features eye-tracking (aptly named Beyond 2e) while the other does not. They’re priced at $1,019 and $1,219, respectively. And while the new headset maintains the dual 1-inch 2,560 × 2,560 micro-OLED displays that the original had, the upgrades are noteworthy. The most significant improvement lies in its larger field-of-view and enhanced clarity thanks to a new pancake lens design. This pushes the Beyond 2 to a 116-degree diagonal FOV compared to the 102 degrees of the original, alongside a customizable IPD mechanism, all packed into a lightweight 107g design.
Initially, the first sets of Beyond 2 and Beyond 2e were slated to ship in April and May, respectively. But with the overwhelming demand, new orders are now expected to ship by June. Who would’ve thought a headset could take the VR market by storm quite like this?
