In recent years, Square Enix has been on a roll with its HD-2D games, but there’s a slight concern from the producer of the Dragon Quest 3 remake about fans potentially getting “bored” with them.
Square Enix introduced the HD-2D style with Octopath Traveler, and it’s been warmly received by fans. The company has since applied this style to several other titles, including the Live A Live remake and the new Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake. Fans are eagerly anticipating Dragon Quest 1 and 2 also getting the HD-2D treatment. In a recent chat with Bloomberg, Masaaki Hayasaka, the producer of the Dragon Quest 3 remake, expressed interest in doing more series remakes in this style. However, he did mention that the success of Dragon Quest 3 could play a big role in deciding the future of other remakes.
Hayasaka candidly explained the tricky balance Square Enix faces. “If we pump out too many games back-to-back, players might lose interest. On the other hand, long gaps between releases can make the series feel less lively and exciting. It’s a delicate issue, and my bosses and I are continuously trying to strike the right balance.”
It’s easy to see why they’re being cautious. There are still plenty of gamers out there who aren’t fans of retro-style graphics, and with Square Enix having some struggles currently, it’s understandable. Fortunately, things seem to be going well for Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake. Just yesterday, it reached over 45,000 players on Steam alone, according to SteamDB—a strong showing for a remake of a single-player RPG.
Whether upcoming remakes of the original and second games maintain these promising numbers remains to be seen. However, for now, the prospect of more HD-2D remakes seems promising.
