As we dive into the latest shots from Sonic the Hedgehog 3, there’s plenty to chatter about. We get brief moments with both Sonic’s and Robotnik’s squads, but one of them seems off. While Sonic, Knuckles, and Tails, who’s sporting a jetpack, are seen zipping through the lush forests of Green Hill, the lineup featuring the duo of Robotniks, Shadow, and Agent Stone looks peculiar. There’s a curious gap between Stone and Robotnik that’s hard to ignore from a visual composition standpoint. Now, if this movie is indeed a retelling of Sonic Adventure 2, there’s one major character we’re missing: Rouge the Bat.
In the Dreamcast classic, Rouge is the treasure-hunting double agent who squares off against Knuckles, so it’s a bit disappointing not seeing her in a film that reintroduces Shadow. Unless, of course, we’re in for a situation akin to Spider-Man: No Way Home, where perhaps she, or another character from the Sonic universe, has been digitally removed to keep fans on their toes until the film’s release. There’s even chatter about the possible introduction of Metal Sonic. Ever since the first trailer dropped, fans have been speculating that the synthetic hedgehog might emerge either in this movie or down the road.
Should Robotnik find himself switching sides in this installment, crafting a robotic counterpart would fit the narrative. However, I’d be concerned about the movie feeling overcrowded if Paramount decided to cram another layer of the Sonic storyline into an Adventure 2 adaptation, considering we already have one villainous hedgehog to deal with. Fingers crossed, it’s Rouge who fills that void.
