FromSoftware recently announced that Elden Ring has surpassed 30 million copies sold worldwide since its launch in 2022, placing it among the best-selling games ever, alongside titles such as Borderlands 2, Call of Duty: Black Ops, and Diablo 3.
Released on February 25, 2022, the game later expanded with a major DLC, Shadow of the Erdtree, on June 21. Since then, 30 million gamers on PC and consoles have ventured into The Lands Between. This achievement is even more remarkable given the game’s reputation for difficulty—players eagerly embraced the challenge!
The game has enjoyed both commercial success and critical acclaim. With positive reviews for both the original game and its DLC, the transition from the Dark Souls series to an open-world format has been a hit with fans and critics alike. Although Elden Ring maintains the challenging gameplay of Dark Souls, it has received some balance tweaks to make it slightly more accessible.
As for what the 30 million sales milestone means for FromSoftware, that’s anyone’s guess. The studio is aware of its beloved status and has exciting plans in the pipeline. Elden Ring Nightreign, a cooperative spin-off drawing from the same universe and assets, is set to launch soon. It’s likely we’ll see more creative ventures from them in this genre.
