Initially, the design was too tied to basic game mechanics, limiting creativity. But once the team decided the cards didn’t have to follow existing rules, the design process blossomed with creativity. For example, the “Dimensional Travel” card allows players to move between two worlds. Although implementing such complex designs proved difficult, they pivoted to make players invisible to enemies instead, offering a fresh dual-world experience without needing separate environments.

### Balancing Fun and Fairness

Some worried that the cards might affect the game’s competitive nature. However, the primary aim is to enhance enjoyment and provide unexpected strategic options without undermining core shooting skills. Newer players enjoyed the unpredictability the cards brought, leading to more engaging matches compared to typical FPS games. Here, cards like the “Blade Master + Turtleback” combo enable players to creatively block bullets, maintaining a competitive edge while adding tactical depth. Ranked modes ensure fairness with a ban-pick system that encourages smart strategies.

### Breaking Tradition

FragPunk mainly features a bomb defusal mode called Shard Clash, introducing cards that reimagine classic gameplay dynamics. For example, attackers can use “Mission Bound” for invincibility while planting, or “Throw to Plant” to toss the converter and automatically plant it, offering intriguing shifts in strategy.
