Lunar Remastered Collection is making its debut on Xbox One, and it’s fully compatible with the Xbox Series X|S. This highly anticipated launch is perfect for fans eager to experience the magic of the classic Lunar games with refreshed elements. I’m here to chat with Amy Nguyen, Senior Graphic Designer at GungHo America, who gave me an in-depth look at the creative journey behind the new logo and package design.
Meeting with Amy, she shared her impressive background in graphic design, highlighting her role in various projects, including her leadership in the console port of Grandia, set for release next year. Designing the Lunar logo was a thrilling, albeit nerve-wracking, task for her. It involved crafting an identity that resonates with devoted fans while introducing a modern flair for a new generation.
Amy kicked off her creative process by delving into the history of Lunar’s original branding. She wanted to ensure that the remastered logo retained its iconic character while embracing fresh elements. Amy sketched numerous designs, trying everything from subtle tweaks to bold changes. Her final selection merged the signature red and inner gloss of the original with sparkling gold accents, symbolizing the enhanced features of the remastered games.
Curious about her sources of inspiration, Amy explained that incorporating nostalgic design cues from the original series was key. She explored vibrant color combinations and emblematic elements like the dragon sword and blue star, anchoring the design in the familiar while expanding it with creative twists. The official logo emerged as a harmonious blend of tradition and innovation.
On the package design front, Amy praised working alongside Toshiyuki Kubooka, the original Lunar artist, who contributed stunning key visuals. Kubooka’s detailed compositions inspired Amy to create a package layout where the original artwork nearly fit perfectly, needing only minor adjustments to keep everything secure within the design framework.
When it came to the back cover, Amy had the creative freedom to play with design elements. Her goal was to showcase the charming pixel sprites and eye-catching game screenshots. These features highlight the game’s nostalgia while still showcasing the graphical enhancements of the remaster. By weaving in elements from the logo like the gold coloring, she ensured a cohesive look across all design components.
Amy felt a deep sense of accomplishment seeing the final package come together, thanks to strong collaborations with many teams, including GungHo’s marketing and production departments and Game Arts, the original developers. This unified effort produced a design she hopes fans will love as much as she enjoyed creating it.
