The Dark Ages brings a fresh twist to the DOOM series, breaking away from the expected formula. During the final and most extensive part of the demo, I had the freedom to explore a sandbox-style environment designed by id. My main task was clear: shut down five portals spitting out demons. However, how I tackled this challenge was up to me, offering endless possibilities for diversion and creativity. Throughout the hour, it was clear that this isn’t like any other DOOM game I’ve experienced before.
In typical sandbox fashion, the area was rich with optional challenges. There were heavily guarded artillery posts to dismantle, gold stashes to upgrade my gear, and so much more. Imagine my surprise when I was casually running along, only to be confronted by a massive tentacle emerging from the earth, not tied to any mission or directive. It was one of those thrilling, unexpected moments that make the journey exciting.
The main objectives also held unique twists. In the initial story mission, sealing portals meant clearing an arena. This time, things were different. Some portals pulled me into dungeons, where I had to solve puzzles to access their power sources. Others were defended by formidable Leader enemies. These foes were immune until I thinned out their minions and rewarded me with significant upgrades after defeating them. I also stumbled upon new weapons, adding more versatility to my arsenal. It felt as though id had been saving these innovative ideas for just the right moment to expand DOOM’s horizons.
The biggest highlight from my session with DOOM: The Dark Ages is witnessing the team’s boundless energy, not just for the classic elements of DOOM, but for the endless possibilities the franchise holds. While I anticipated new narratives, weapons, and enemies, I wasn’t prepared for a complete shift in style. I’m eagerly waiting to see what else this creative team will unveil.
DOOM: The Dark Ages is set to be released on May 15, 2025, for Xbox Series X|S, PC (via the Xbox app for Windows PC, Steam, and Battle.net), PlayStation 5, and cloud platforms. It will be available on Game Pass from day one.
