Microsoft is broadening players’ options by introducing DOOM: The Dark Ages to Blizzard Entertainment’s Battle.net platform. This marks the second Xbox exclusive, outside of the Activision Blizzard realm, making its way to the Blizzard-heavy PC store. Previously, Obsidian Entertainment’s Avowed had set the stage with its February release.
With DOOM: The Dark Ages, players enjoy the perks of the Xbox Play Anywhere system. Buying the game on Xbox Series X|S, the Xbox PC app, or Battle.net grants ownership across all three platforms. Subscribers to Xbox Game Pass Ultimate or PC Game Pass can also enjoy it on Windows PC via Battle.net.
Xbox’s strategy of testing different game deployment methods seems to be effective. Owning DOOM: The Dark Ages on Blizzard’s platform represents a significant move for the multiplayer shooter genre. The success of Avowed shows that this approach might become more common for Xbox’s in-house titles. Currently, the upcoming South of Midnight from Compulsion Games isn’t slated for Battle.net, but who knows? The rollout plan could evolve post-launch.
With several more Xbox titles on the horizon for this year, with some yet to be disclosed, it’s a waiting game to see which ones will feature on which platforms. Meanwhile, anticipation is building for seeing the Slayer and his trusty dragon, Serrat, dominate Battle.net.
Players won’t have long to wait, as DOOM: The Dark Ages is set to release on May 15, 2025. It will be available on Xbox Series X|S, Windows PC (including Steam, the Xbox PC app, and Battle.net), and PlayStation 5. Players who opt for the Premium Edition get a two-day head start. On release day, the Standard Edition will be accessible to Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass subscribers.
