Sony has finally addressed the lawsuit brought forward by former Bungie employee Christopher Barrett.
In a fresh legal filing reported by Game File, Sony has shared text exchanges between Barrett and female Bungie employees, claiming these messages reveal a “pattern of misconduct.”
Barrett departed from Bungie in March 2024, with the exit later attributed to allegations of inappropriate behavior toward female colleagues. He has since sued for wrongful termination, seeking $200 million in damages, arguing that his dismissal cost him $45 million that he was to receive from Sony’s acquisition of Bungie in 2022.
According to Sony’s filing, Barrett was terminated because he allegedly targeted a female employee who was not directly under his supervision. He reportedly began with a friendly rapport that escalated to inappropriate comments about her appearance and unwanted romantic interest, aiming to establish an unprofessional intimacy with his female coworkers.
This legal document also includes snippets of text and direct messages allegedly sent by Barrett to these women.
In response, Barrett’s legal team commented to Game File, accusing Sony of selectively extracting messages and conversations to slander him and justify their decision to terminate his employment, thereby avoiding his due compensation.
His lawyers argue, “It’s quite telling that Sony didn’t present the entire content of these messages or conversations as evidence. Nothing in their filing provides a valid legal or factual reason to fire Christopher.”
Barrett’s team remains optimistic, asserting, “Christopher is confident that once all the evidence is on the table, it will become evident that Sony orchestrated a scheme to strip him of his position and the equity rewards he earned after 25 years of dedicated service.”
