A Korean gaming studio, Pixelity, has stirred up excitement by announcing their upcoming XR game based on the beloved 1990s anime, Neon Genesis Evangelion. The studio proudly shared in a recent blog post that it’s secured an official licensing agreement with Japan’s Studio Khara to bring this thrilling project to life. The game, which will unfold over three parts, is inspired by the iconic anime’s full 26-episode storyline. Fans will be pleased to know that the first segment is already under development and set to launch in 2026.
For seasoned Evangelion enthusiasts like us, this is a dream come true. The anime was a major catalyst for the anime boom in Japan during the ’90s, becoming a cult classic and paving the way for many others that followed.
Set in a futuristic 2015, the narrative follows the journey of Shinji Ikari, chosen to pilot the Evangelion, a humanoid combat machine that stands as humanity’s last hope against the enigmatic attackers known as Angels in the cityscape of Tokyo-3.
While Pixelity hasn’t disclosed the specific gaming platforms, the game promises an immersive XR experience. Players can explore various locales, keep in sync with the anime’s storyline, undertake gripping missions, and engage in action-packed battles.
According to Pixelity, “The game will integrate collaborative play, allowing interaction with several beloved Evangelion characters—a feature that’s bound to attract long-time fans. Our aim is to deliver the kind of dynamic excitement that players expect from an action-adventure game.”
Pixelity, established in 2017, already has several VR titles under its belt, including Puttzzle (2023), Crazyworld VR (2022), and Rise of the Fallen (2018). Alongside the Evangelion project, they’re also developing two other VR titles, The Patcher and Teahouse of Souls.
Although Evangelion has ventured into the VR world before, this marks the series’ first official at-home gaming experience. Back in 2017, Bandai Namco teamed up with VR studio Project i Can to launch a four-player experience called Evangelion VR: The Throne of Souls at VR ZONE in Shinjuku, Japan, which was a limited-time attraction. Now, fans everywhere will be able to dive into Shinji’s world from the comfort of their own homes.
