The tactical military simulation shooter, Onward, developed by Downpour Interactive, is gearing up for a significant 2.0 update. This announcement is exciting, especially since it’s been nearly a year since the last substantial update. Back then, players were treated to the ‘Mercenary’ update, introducing a PvE mode and improving graphics.
For those wondering if Onward was still in the mix, it absolutely is. Over the past year, updates have been sporadic, but the upcoming release promises to be a game-changer. Downpour Interactive, now under the helm of Meta, has revealed in a recent blog post that Onward’s coming update “will be its largest yet,” featuring a wealth of exciting content.
Among the improvements, players can expect “a massive graphical overhaul” that enhances both weapons and utilities. Plus, there’s a brand-new Operator system featuring 20 fresh characters and new map content, which is bound to add a refreshing twist to the game. Although Meta has kept specifics under wraps, they’ve teased that more details about the 2.0 update will be disclosed “very soon.”
The news comes after a tough period in the gaming industry, including some challenging times for Downpour Interactive itself. In 2023, the studio faced significant layoffs, and Dante Buckley, the founder and former CEO, departed just a month before these changes took place. Buckley founded the company back in 2015 and played a pivotal role in bringing Onward to life.
Originally debuting on Steam in Early Access in 2016 and later on the Oculus Quest in 2020, Onward has always been about delivering a realistic and immersive squad-based experience. Its dedication to replicating real-world weaponry has been a defining aspect of the game.
For those eager to dive into Onward, it’s available on the Horizon Store for Quest 2 and above, as well as on Steam for PC VR headsets. The game is typically priced at $25, making it accessible for those looking to engage in its tactical battles.
