Warner Bros. Games and Avalanche Software might just have some magical surprises up their sleeves for us, with a rumored DLC for Hogwarts Legacy expected in 2025. More exciting is the confirmation that Hogwarts Legacy 2 is indeed underway. A sequel to such a standout game from 2023 isn’t too surprising, yet the timing of this potential DLC does raise some eyebrows.
Ever since the game hit the shelves, Harry Potter enthusiasts have been eagerly waiting for an add-on. But as time passed with no word from the creators, hopes began to dwindle. Rolling out a DLC this late is certainly unconventional and risks a decrease in player interest. Yet, this isn’t entirely unheard of—just look at Cyberpunk 2077’s Phantom Liberty, which followed three years later in September 2023, or Elden Ring’s The Shadow of the Erdtree release in June 2024, more than two years post-launch. Although not ideal, there’s still a chance that Hogwarts Legacy’s DLC could make a splash, albeit not as big as it might have earlier.
One of the consistent criticisms has been the lack of post-game content. While there is a good bit to explore, especially in the castle and Hogsmeade, things tend to become repetitive. The storyline also faced backlash for its brevity and underwhelming depth. Had the DLC been released earlier, it might have kept the magic alive for fans meanwhile, maintaining engagement and enthusiasm when new titles bombard the gaming scene every year. Plus, any momentum would likely have carried over to the positive reception of Harry Potter: Quidditch Champions.
Recently, the modding scene for Hogwarts Legacy received a boost with official mod support and the Creator Kit. Modders have already brought a lot of unique content to the table. Now with developer access, there’ll be even more creative fan-made quests and cosmetics. A future DLC would have stiff competition as mods might have already provided similar experiences. This suggests that both a DLC and a Definitive Edition could have seen greater success had they arrived sooner.
Even so, there’s optimism that a new DLC could finally offer content that’s been missing from the original game. Plenty was apparently left on the editing floor, including companion quests, a morality system, expanded pet mechanics, and multiplayer features. Some of these have been tackled by the modding community, yet there’s room for something official, especially if rumors of 10-15 hours of fresh content hold true.
With the sequel a few years away, there’s a real opportunity for these upcoming releases to bridge the gap. Supported by recent interest from official mods, now could be an ideal time for this DLC to land. It’s probably for the best that any release avoids a lukewarm reception like the Summer Update 2024, which didn’t exactly wow the fanbase.
Ultimately, if the DLC does come to fruition, leveraging the current positive vibes around mod support would be wise. Fans might have to wait longer than expected, yet the end result is what matters—Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty is testimony to that.
