Omega 6: The Triangle Stars is a charmingly nostalgic journey brought to life by the renowned Takaya Imamura, who made waves as Nintendo’s art director for over three decades. Imamura’s artistic brilliance is immortalized in iconic creations like F-Zero’s Captain Falcon, characters from Star Fox, and Majora’s Mask’s unforgettable mask.
After years of collaborating with Nintendo, Imamura pursued a lifelong ambition to craft his very own manga, Omega 6, now available in France. Riding this wave of creativity, he transformed Omega 6 into a true-to-the-era 16-bit adventure game. Infused with the same innovative spirit that enriched Nintendo’s legacy, this game takes us down memory lane. In a chat with Game Rant, Imamura shared his vision for the game and the diverse planets players will traverse.
In today’s gaming world, countless titles strive to unravel grand narratives, bursting with philosophical questions, moral quandaries, and jaw-dropping twists. While video game storytelling has soared to remarkable heights, Imamura opted for a more straightforward approach. His goal for Omega 6: The Triangle Stars was to whisk players back to simpler times, embodying a retro aesthetic and vibe. He explains:
“This sentiment applies to both the comic and the game. These days, everything—whether it’s games, comics, or movies—dives deep into meanings and character arcs. But for me, I wanted to hit rewind. I want the game to both look and feel retro, taking a step back to simplicity.”
“What I really want players to experience is nostalgia—a chance to revisit their childhood, feel that youthful simplicity, and relish those simple joys.”
That being said, Omega 6: The Triangle Stars certainly doesn’t skimp on intriguing narratives. Set in a universe where human lifespans have significantly expanded, the emergence of aliens on Earth starts to unsettle human society. Eventually, the Omega 6 starship embarks on a quest to find new horizons for humanity. Within this backdrop, players join Thunder, Kyla, and their robotic companion, Prop, on a treasure-seeking mission, journeying across the game’s varied planets.
Embracing the spirit of any thrilling space adventure, Omega 6: The Triangle Stars presents a diverse planetary experience. Recognizing that sticking to a single environment could grow tiresome, Imamura and his team opted for a more dynamic setting. Imamura shares:
“The inspiration behind these diverse planets originated from wanting players to explore a variety of settings. You want the game to offer more than just the same old backdrops.”
“To keep things straightforward and engaging, we split the game into three distinct planets. Initially, it revolved around one planet and its satellites, but we soon realized it didn’t quite capture the scale we wanted. That’s when we considered upgrading these satellites to full-fledged planets, leading to the last-minute subtitle, The Triangle Stars.”
“The planet themes are straightforward: one is swelteringly hot, another freezing cold, and the third is teeming with treasure hunters and shady figures. The goal wasn’t to create deep cultures but rather to make it easy for players to remember what happened where in this adventurous journey.”
Keeping it as simple and delightful as a Saturday morning cartoon, Omega 6: The Triangle Stars doesn’t explore complex civilizations in the vein of Mass Effect. Instead, it artfully introduces variety, helping players find their stride and bask in the nostalgia of a classic, timeless adventure.
