Sony has recently unveiled its list of the top PS5 downloads for 2024, and to no one’s surprise, several live service games have made their way onto it. This decision has sparked some controversy among fans, but it highlights why the company has committed to pushing live service titles. In a similar vein, industry analyst Mat Piscatella has revealed which games topped the charts across all platforms in 2024, underscoring the validity of this approach.
In a detailed post on Bluesky, Piscatella shared a ranking of the top 20 games based on dollar sales in the U.S. for 2024. This comprehensive list includes both physical and digital sales from major platforms like Nintendo eShop, PlayStation, Steam, and Xbox, covering the period from December 30, 2023, to January 4, 2025. Here’s the rundown:
1. Call of Duty: Black Ops 6
2. EA Sports College Football 25
3. Helldivers 2
4. Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zero
5. NBA 2K25
6. Madden NFL 25
7. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3
8. EA Sports FC 25
9. Elden Ring
10. EA Sports MVP Bundle
11. Hogwarts Legacy
12. Dragon’s Dogma 2
13. WWE 2K24
14. MLB: The Show 24
15. Grand Theft Auto 5
16. Minecraft
17. Final Fantasy 7: Rebirth
18. Tekken 8
19. Marvel’s Spider-Man 2
20. NBA 2K24
For those who regularly keep an eye on sales data, many of these titles won’t come as a shock. Games like Call of Duty, NBA 2K, and GTA 5, along with EA Sports FC (formerly known as FIFA), are perennial top performers in the market. However, the entry of Helldivers 2 from PlayStation’s live service lineup is quite surprising when considering Sony’s previous struggles in this domain. Despite past setbacks, Arrowhead’s sequel has managed to set off on a strong foot.
The list notably features a good number of games incorporating live service components. Out of the top nine best-selling games in 2024, eight integrate these features. Although this might not align with every fan’s vision of Sony’s gaming direction, the data sheds light on why the company is leaning towards games as a service.
