The buzz surrounding the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 is undeniable, with its reveal trailer currently outperforming the 2020 PlayStation 5 announcement in terms of YouTube views. However, it still lags slightly behind the first glimpse we got of the original Switch back in 2016.
Nintendo’s two-minute reveal video, which dropped on January 16, has stirred up excitement by showcasing not just the new hardware, but also hinting at an exciting new Mario Kart game. This announcement comes after years of leaks and rumors swirling around the successor to the original Switch.
Just three days post-release, the trailer has already garnered an impressive 18.78 million views and over a million likes on Nintendo of America’s YouTube channel. In comparison, the PS5’s unveiling video secured about 18.14 million views in the same timeframe after its June 2020 release. Fast forward to early 2025, and the PS5 video sits comfortably at 44 million views with 1.6 million likes. There’s a fair chance the Switch 2 trailer will eclipse these numbers, at least in terms of likes, before long.
Interestingly, the Switch 2’s initial hype has yet to catch up to the explosive reception of its predecessor. The original Switch trailer hit 19.5 million views in just two days after its 2016 debut, although it was later removed from YouTube, according to VGC.
The fervor for Nintendo’s next big thing is hard to miss. Analysts predict that Nintendo is eyeing a rollout of around 20 million Switch 2 units in its first year—significantly more than the first Switch’s debut numbers, which hit supply snags, especially during the pandemic in 2020.
Keen to maintain this momentum, Nintendo has lined up global pop-up events from April to June 2025, allowing fans to get some hands-on time with the new console. Meanwhile, a dedicated Nintendo Direct event focusing on the Switch 2 is scheduled for April 2, aiming to reveal more about the console’s features, release date, and potential $449 price tag—a noticeable uptick from the original’s launch price.
Nintendo Switch 2 is shaping up to be a worthy successor with its promise of backward compatibility, set for an official release in 2025. Expect full details come April, as excitement builds towards an eagerly awaited debut.
