Some of us just can’t say no to games that offer a rich tapestry of exploration. Many of these titles often sit within the sci-fi genre, which makes perfect sense given the genre’s capacity for vast, unexplored galaxies. However, developers face a tricky balance. Sure, a massive galaxy sounds enticing, yet players don’t want to spend hours meandering through empty space just because it’s expansive. Conversely, overwhelming players with busywork and endless fetch quests to make the universe appear lively isn’t the answer either. But when developers get it right, oh boy, do they get it right. And that’s what we’re hoping for with Cubic Odyssey, the game I’m about to dive into.
Developed by the talented folks over at Atypical Games and published by Gaijin Entertainment, Cubic Odyssey kicks off with a crash landing on a distant planet. From there, your journey begins as you gather resources, refine materials, and construct everything from simple tools and outposts to sophisticated vehicles and eventually the starships that let you roam the galaxy freely.
In Cubic Odyssey, every twinkling star you see at night is the heart of a star system bustling with planets waiting to be explored. Each of these planets boasts its own unique ecosystem and dynamic day-night cycles. You’ll discover cities teeming with NPCs, pirate outposts, and mysterious ruins with their hidden secrets. The ultimate goal? To halt the Red Darkness, a pervasive cosmic menace that mutates wildlife, devours planets, and poses a threat to all life.
Expect seamless transitions as you travel ground, air, and space. As a player, you’ll execute warp jumps between star systems and zip between planets at breathtaking speeds. On the ground, you’ll navigate alien terrains on speeders and explore subterranean ruins and concealed regions on foot. The game offers the flexibility and versatility that caters to a multitude of play styles.
Prefer having company on your adventures? Cubic Odyssey has you covered with an optional co-op mode. Team up with fellow adventurers to tackle colossal enemies, initiate orbital strikes, or even construct massive cooperative mega-structures. Collaboration promises plenty of exciting opportunities for those who relish gaming with friends.
“We intend to build a boundless open world where every planet, every system, and every moment is yours to shape,” says Andrei Lopata, CEO of Atypical Games, based in Bucharest.
For those of you who can’t resist the call of endless possibilities, Cubic Odyssey seems set to deliver a ton of fun. With its release scheduled for PC, PS5, and Xbox S/X later this year, it’s worth keeping an eye on this intriguing title as the launch approaches. Be sure to stay tuned for more updates on this promising adventure.
