With a hearty mix of creativity from Larian Studios and the dedicated efforts of the modding community, Baldur’s Gate 3 continues to evolve, its already expansive world seemingly never enough for devoted DnD enthusiasts.
Last year, there was a flurry of inventive activity centered around BG3, not just before, but also following the official rollout of mod support in the summer. Among the standout creations was the ‘Trials of Tav’, crafted by modder Hippo0o. This clever addition introduced a roguelike mode that invited players to embark on thrilling adventures, battling wave upon wave of relentless foes. Hippo0o himself explained this exciting endeavor at the time.
As updates for the original mod began to slow, other enterprising modders started to make their mark on Trials of Tav, infusing it with their own unique ideas and improvements. Enter ‘Trials of Tav – Reloaded’, courtesy of modder Celerev.
Celerev’s rendition of the roguelike mode is designed to offer substantial updates, including bug fixes, revamped monsters, and the introduction of new enemies inspired by tabletop games. Curious about these fresh foes? One noteworthy addition is the ultimate challenge—a true “superboss” at level 27, crafted to test the very limits of your RPG prowess.
This formidable creature represents the peak of the scaling system. Conquer it, and you can proudly declare victory over your run. It’s certainly a challenge worth accepting—provided you survived those 20 harrowing encounters with the rats in the Elfsong Tavern’s basement.
Celerev hasn’t stopped there, though. The mod boasts more than 60 adversaries from the original game, including “unique, rarely-fought enemies” like Nine-Fingers Keene and what appears to be a rather formidable sheep. Moreover, there are fresh custom bosses and numerous bug fixes for pre-existing ones. On the mechanics side, scaling rates have been adjusted to ensure that creatures with powerful abilities blend seamlessly into the game, without leaving players perpetually outmatched at crucial moments. Additionally, shops have undergone a thoughtful rebalancing.
Expressing admiration for Hippo0o’s groundbreaking work, Celerev notes, “I cannot overstate how incredible the work Hippo0o has done [in creating the original mod] is. While I’ve had the advantage of using the toolkit and delving deep into the game mechanics, the lua scripting that created a functioning mode from scratch shows immense passion, effort, and skill. I hope those of you who, like me, wish to see the tactical combat of BG3 taken to higher levels will enjoy what I’ve added.”
Of course, you might prefer to stick with the original Trials of Tav if Celerev’s enhancements don’t match your play style. Still, it’s fascinating to witness the evolution of such modding concepts. And if nothing else, it could be an entertaining diversion while you await potential entry into the Patch 8 testing, slated to kick off later this month.
