What’s the ultimate crossover you’d love to see in Final Fantasy 14? Personally, I’ve got my fingers crossed for some sort of FF7 event in the near future. But the beauty of Square Enix’s collaborations is that they can reach beyond their iconic franchises as well. Given that FF14 has been around for more than ten years, I’m convinced that these major crossover events are key to keeping the game thriving over the next decade. While everyone has their preferences, there’s a key figure at Square Enix who dreams of a collaboration between FF14 and League of Legends. If that idea excites you too, now might be the perfect time to let your thoughts be known.
With the Dawntrail expansion finally released, Final Fantasy 14 is soaring to new heights. Currently, the game is enjoying a collaboration with another Square Enix MMORPG, FF11, featuring the Echoes of Vana’diel Alliance Raid series. It’s packed with some of the most challenging and engaging content available. But my curiosity is always piqued about what’s next for FF14, especially potential collaborations with other franchises. That’s why the prospect of lead battle content designer Masaki Nakagawa wanting a League of Legends crossover is particularly thrilling to me.
In a recent interview with GamesRadar, Nakagawa expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “I personally love League of Legends and have been playing the game for a long time, so a crossover with them would be a dream come true.” He went on to say, “It would be great fun if Aatrox and Aurelion Sol were featured as raid bosses in FF14. It might also be quite interesting to have FF14 characters implemented as crossover champions in League of Legends! If a Riot Games representative is reading this, it would be an honor if I could speak with you!”
While we’re waiting to see if Riot bites on this idea, Nakagawa isn’t stopping there. He’s also keen on a Final Fantasy 7 crossover but believes it might have to wait until the current remake trilogy is finished.
He continued by saying, “I personally would love to do a crossover with the Final Fantasy 7 Remake, though it’s being developed by a separate team in our company. Even if it were to happen, I imagine it would have to be after the FF7 Remake trilogy is complete, but it is very exciting to think about designing crossover content with various FF7 characters and bosses. That being said, I absolutely do not want to interfere with the FF7 team’s development right now, so I’d like to perhaps bring it up with them when an appropriate opportunity arises.”
Excitingly, even FF7 Rebirth director Naoki Hamaguchi is eyeing a collaboration with FF14. It feels like it’s just a matter of time before we see these worlds collide. In the meantime, we’ve got Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth ready to launch on PC, offering plenty of content to dive into.
With the Dawntrail expansion settling in, I can’t stress enough how much you should check out Ken’s review of Final Fantasy 14 Dawntrail. Although the patch content might still be in its early stages, the existing line-up of dungeons and trials sets the scene for what could be FF14’s next big chapter.
If you’re still adventuring through Tural, keep tabs on the FF14 server status. And don’t miss out on those thrilling hunt trains—make sure to collect all the Final Fantasy 14 Dawntrail Aether Current locations.
