At The Game Awards last night, fans finally got a sneak peek at The Witcher 4, featuring an exciting new trailer. Ciri, now taking center stage as the main character, showcased some serious witcher skills in this first look. Ever since that intriguing teaser of a medallion in the snow, speculations have been rife about Ciri, Geralt’s stepdaughter, stepping into the spotlight as the new lead. Now, with confirmation from CD Projekt, the game developers have shared some insights into this decision to hand over the baton to Ciri.
In an interview with PC Gamer, Sebastian Kalemba, the game director for The Witcher 4, and executive producer Gosia Mitręga, unveiled that the idea of Ciri taking the lead was conceived nearly a decade ago. It was during the period when they were wrapping up The Witcher 3, a game in which Ciri plays a pivotal role and even becomes a playable character in several missions.
Kalemba remarked, “Following the release of Wild Hunt, we naturally saw Ciri’s potential to prove herself as a lead. It was an instinctive choice for us.” He further explained, “Ciri’s character is so rich and complex, offering us a plethora of exploration opportunities. Her journey’s beginning opens up countless avenues for storytelling.”
MitrÄ™ga highlighted the contrast between Geralt and Ciri, noting that her youthful zeal and curiosity differ significantly from Geralt’s seasoned monster-hunting expertise and vast worldly experience. “Her deep passion,” MitrÄ™ga said, “provides us with a fantastic chance to craft a narrative full of surprises and uncertainties, enriching the player’s experience.”
For those worried about Geralt’s absence, rest assured, the legendary witcher will make an appearance in The Witcher 4. While Kalemba offered no specifics about Geralt’s role, he emphasized his significance to both the developers and Ciri. Surely, that classic image of Geralt giving a playful thumbs-up would fit perfectly here.
As excitement builds around the next chapter in The Witcher saga, why not revisit The Witcher 3? I recently enjoyed tinkering with a fun mod that lets Geralt transform into a centaur with the blow of a horn. Without a doubt, Geralt will still play a crucial part in the witchering adventures to come.
