For the past three weeks, Nintendo Switch Online subscribers have been treated to a nostalgic journey through the Game Boy library, and now it’s the turn of Donkey Kong Land III to make its debut.
Following in the footsteps of the previous two weeks’ releases, Donkey Kong Land III is now up for grabs in the Game Boy section. Originally launched in 1997, this game is the third installment in the Game Boy line that uniquely adapted the beloved Donkey Kong Country series for handheld play. In Land III, players join Dixie and Kiddy Kong on an adventurous quest to uncover the “Lost World” and beat K. Rool, as well as Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong, to the prize.
Notably, Donkey Kong himself takes a backseat in this adventure, as he neither appears as a playable character nor a damsel in distress needing rescue—a departure from what fans might expect in a game bearing his name. This installment strays further from the Super Nintendo’s Country 3 than its earlier counterparts, offering fans something a bit different.
Interestingly, the Japanese version of the app offers players the rare 2000 Game Boy Color re-release instead of the original Game Boy version—a treat that was originally exclusive to that region.
