Arcane will wrap up after just two seasons, and despite whispers of it stretching to five, League of Legends’ creator has set the record straight.
Earlier this year, Netflix dropped a bombshell that left many fans grappling with disappointment: the second season of Arcane will also be its last. Riot has bigger ambitions for the animated League of Legends universe, but somehow, the grapevine buzzed with talk of five planned seasons. In response to a Reddit post that misinterpreted League of Legends creator and Riot co-founder Marc Merrill’s comments on the matter, Merrill chimed in with some clarification. He explained, “Arcane was always intended to be a two-season show.”
Internally, talks about budgeting for up to five seasons had occurred, leading to some confusion. As Merrill noted, “We discussed setting aside a big chunk of money for future development, which has nothing to do with Arcane’s creative direction.” With the entire production and marketing budget reportedly hitting $250 million, it’s easy to see how these misunderstandings might have sparked. Merrill stressed that “the main focus for Riot and our teams should always be creating something amazing.”
Riot has long had ambitions beyond Arcane, aiming to keep expanding the storytelling in the League universe. Yet, as Merrill pointed out, “Even though we intend to tell more stories, misinformation can spread fast, especially when headlines mislead and remain unaddressed.” Acknowledging the momentum runaway rumors can gain, Merrill added, “We’re happy to clarify the truth. Creating shows of this caliber, like crafting games players love, isn’t easy. It’s an incredibly tough undertaking, especially as we’re building this from the ground up for the first time.”
So, in essence, while budgetary discussions covered multiple seasons, Arcane was never planned for five. Still, our own Connor can’t get enough of season two—he finds it almost impossible to tear himself away from the screen.
