Nintendo recently announced that their Nintendo Switch Online service boasts over 34 million subscribers, based on data from September 30, 2024.
This information was shared during a presentation by Nintendo’s president, Shuntaro Furukawa, outlining the company’s financial results for the second quarter and discussing corporate management policies. The presentation also examined recent changes within their dedicated video game platform business.
Interestingly, this figure marks a slight drop from the 36 million subscribers reported in September 2022. Nintendo explained that the dip was largely due to fewer new games being released over the past year that emphasize online play. Despite this, there has been steady growth in subscriptions to Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack, ever since its launch in 2021.
To make Nintendo Switch Online more appealing, they have recently added Nintendo Music—a music streaming service exclusive to subscribers, accessible through a mobile app.
In response to a shareholder inquiry about whether Nintendo Music might eventually be available to non-subscribers, Furukawa stated:
“Nintendo Switch Online is meant to enrich the Nintendo Switch experience, and that fundamental goal hasn’t changed.”
“Nintendo Music is an app allowing Nintendo Switch Online members to enjoy Nintendo game music on their smart devices. Game music is vital to our content offerings, and we believe this service fits well with our strategy to increase the reach of Nintendo IP. We introduced Nintendo Music to offer game music to fans in a uniquely Nintendo way.”
“We feel that if hearing Nintendo Music evokes memories of our games, it might motivate players to revisit those experiences.”
“Ultimately, we hope that Nintendo Music can serve as another incentive for people to keep their Nintendo Switch Online subscriptions active.”
