Back in September, during Meta’s Connect event, an exciting development was shared: Meta and Microsoft are teaming up to bring a wireless connection between Windows 11 PCs and Quest headsets. Fast forward to today, and there’s news that we’ll get a sneak peek at this feature come December.
This upcoming capability allows the Quest 3 and Quest 3S to establish wireless links with Windows 11 PCs, creating a multi-monitor setup for work purposes. If you’ve experienced Apple’s Vision Pro with a Mac, this might sound familiar. Apple’s XR headset has offered this kind of connectivity via the Mac Virtual Display since its debut in February 2024.
Microsoft has announced that it plans to offer this new feature in a public preview later in December. Their goal is to cater to users eager to boost their productivity with this tech.
Melissa Grant, the Senior Director of Product Marketing for Microsoft 365, elaborated on this in a blog: “With Windows in mixed reality, we’re bringing the complete functionality of Windows 11 to mixed reality headsets, beginning with Meta Quest 3 and Quest 3S. Connecting your Quest headset to your local Windows PC or even a Windows 365 Cloud PC is straightforward, taking just moments to set up. This gives you access to a top-notch, private, multi-monitor workstation.”
During its initial announcement at the Connect event, Meta showcased a fascinating aspect of this technology. Users will be able to engage with their PCs simply by looking at their keyboard, instantly accessing the computer and managing windows across multiple virtual monitors. This marks a significant shift from the existing Remote Desktop experience offered through Meta’s Air Link.
Though the Quest headsets are known primarily for their excellent VR gaming capabilities, Meta’s CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, envisions an even broader role. He sees this integration with Windows as a fundamental move toward making Quest a comprehensive computing platform.
“This is the future of general computing,” Zuckerberg stated. “While Quest remains phenomenal at gaming, it’s poised to do much more. You’re going to be able to use it for apps, watching videos—essentially everything you’d expect from a general-purpose computer. Quest offers all of this.”
We’ll be keeping our ears open for any updates on release dates and will share any new information as soon as we have it.
