Bloober Team’s Silent Hill 2 Remake, which was heavily showcased in PS5 Pro promos, didn’t exactly shine when it launched. The reception was lukewarm at best. To address the concerns, a patch was released, which notably removed a key PS5 Pro feature.
According to Digital Foundry on Twitter, this update swapped out Sony’s proprietary PSSR for Unreal Engine 5’s standard TSR in the game’s Performance Mode. Interestingly, eliminating Sony’s supersampler has resolved many of the issues players experienced.
In a tweet from Digital Foundry, they break down the strengths and weaknesses of PSSR, reflecting on the updates to Silent Hill 2 for PS5 Pro, offering insights into games like Assassin’s Creed Syndicate finally running at 60fps, and even more insights into games like Callisto Protocol and STALKER 2.
Furthermore, the frame rate in Silent Hill 2 Remake now performs better than before, achieving a more consistent 60 frames per second post-patch. This change adds another layer to the conversation about Sony’s $700 mid-generation upgrade aimed at “hardcore gamers.” It’s certainly something to ponder when considering the next big purchase for your gaming setup.
